About Dan, the ShockingGuy
Alarm installer, scanner listener, live streamer and lifelong fire safety advocate.
Dan, better known as ShockingGuy, is a lifelong fire safety advocate and the creator behind this site.
He spent decades installing electronic alarm systems, including commercial fire alarm systems, and he has a strong background in electrical work. That work taught him how alarms are supposed to function, and how often the ones in people's homes do not.
Out on the calls
Dan keeps a police scanner on and often heads out to fire calls at any hour, mostly around Cleveland, Ohio. He films and streams what he sees on YouTube, and he learns from every scene. His channel also follows the rest of his journey, from road trips to home repairs. The fires are real, and so is the lesson behind each one: early warning saves lives.
Why this site exists
Saving lives from fire is more than a hobby for Dan. It is his mission. ShockingGuy TV puts his streams and videos in one place, and the guides on this site cover the simple things that make the biggest difference. Test your smoke alarms every month. Replace them at 10 years. Put them in the right places.
ShockingGuy is an independent creator. Dan is not a firefighter or a spokesperson for any fire department or agency, and nothing on this site replaces the advice of your local fire department or the instructions that came with your alarm. In an emergency, call 911.
